Find out the most effective ways to get rid of your painful sore throat.
No one likes dealing with a sore throat, but this painful condition most often rears its ugly head around the colder months. However, you don’t have to suffer in silence. Ease sore throat symptoms just by following some of these tried and true remedies. Better yet—all of these remedies can be done from the comfort of your own home.
Home Remedies to Combat Sore Throats
Most of the time at-home measures are all that are needed to treat a sore throat caused by a virus (e.g. influenza; common cold). Try out some of these tips to see if any of them relieve your sore throat symptoms:
- Gargle and rinse with warm salt water every hour to help reduce any swelling and irritation that could be caused by postnasal drip. Every hour place 1tsp of salt into an 8oz glass of warm water and let it dissolve before gargling.
- Increase your intake of fluids to reduce throat irritation. Drinking hot tea or sipping warm broth may ease any soreness you experience. Do not let yourself get dehydrated, as this will only increase irritation.
- If you are suffering from hoarseness or swelling place a humidifier in your room to help keep the air around you moist. Even though you don’t want the air too damp, putting some moisture back into the room can help soothe your sore throat symptoms.
- Suck on throat lozenges that offer a numbing agent to help calm a painful, swollen throat.
- Consider using over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
- If you do smoke, avoid smoking while sick, as this can exacerbate your condition.
If any of these symptoms happen to you while treating your sore throat at home, then it’s time to see your ENT doctor in Wayne:
- Sudden, intense pain
- Unable to drink anything or stay hydrated
- Problems breathing
- A new rash or fever comes about
- Your sore throat or other symptoms last over two weeks
- Symptoms just continue to get worse
Whether you are suffering from a sore throat or you are dealing with hearing loss, let your Wayne ENT doctor, Dr. Frank L. Kardos, MD be there to help. While not all symptoms require treatment if you are dealing with persistent problems then it’s time to schedule an appointment.
